“Autonomies in Progress” is microsystème’s first production workshop. ?It began from the observation that a poor mastery of the French language is in itself a criteria for discrimination today, and that this non-mastery, and the lack of confidence it brings, constitutes a major obstacle for those seeking employment, regardless of how long they have been in France or of their qualifications. The goal of “Autonomies in Progress” is to promote equal opportunities, and to aid in the social and professional integration of disadvantaged groups by supporting individuals seeking employment, in their training or the improving of both their written and spoken French language skills, through the practice of theatre. ?The workshop explores the issue of professional integration within our societies, and the role played by a mastery of language.

Funded by the European Social Fund (objective 3, measure 10b), “Autonomies in Progress” was created between January and March 2008 at Blanc-Mesnil, with the support of the Forum, a publicly funded theatre in Blanc-Mesnil, and the city’s employment benefits service. Over these three months, guided by microsystème, the participants of “Autonomies in Progress” questioned themselves about their job seeking. During these career surveys, which took place in Blanc-Mesnil and its surroundings, participants reversed the roles in which they find themselves as job seekers: instead of interviewee they became the interviewer. These interviews were filmed, recorded and transcribed, and became the textual material used in the performance of “Autonomies in Progress” that took place on 8 March 2008 at the Forum in Blanc-Mesnil.
