Docteur Faustus

  • By Christopher Marlowe
  • Translator : Jean-Louis Backès
  • Staging : Victor Gauthier-Martin
  • Cast :

Christopher Marlowe’s Faust – Faustus – is the shadow of his author, a portrayal of the intellectual adventurer of the Renaissance. He rushes headlong with the urgency of someone who knows he is going to die. Young in spirit if not in body, and ambitious, Faustus tampers with natural laws, social codes, public order and rules. His is a quest for truth and an obligation to self-honesty, with a hint of the tragicomic... Faustus seeks the tools that will shatter the limits of his human condition: from optical illusions and mind induction, to illusional phenomena through image manipulation, computer attacks and genetic engineering. Yet behind his ultra-sophisticated machines, Faustus retains the essence of an age-old sorcerer.

He experiences the superhuman, the perfect man of which science allows us to dream: the ability to sculpt oneself, to program oneself to become the image of what we want to be, to live longer. The electronics, pills, and surgery that are now a part of our lives help "as if by magic" to make us more intelligent, stronger, and quicker – in other words, more efficient.
